In January 2008, Candy Tan and her friend Kate discovered glaring similarities between lengthy passages in Cassie Edwards’ Shadow Bear, and several research texts about Native Americans. When Candy first published her comparisons, the response was immediate from our readership. I examined my copies of Edwards’ novels and documented my findings, as did many of our readers. Ultimately, the side-by-side comparison chart (PDF) now encompasses over 20 novels and many, many public domain research texts.

That weekend, on 12 January 2008, The New York Times covered the story. Then, journalist Paul Tolme discussed finding his magazine article text appearing as post-coital pillow talk in Newsweek online.
